The Power of Craft
Eating in a house where almost everything is made on site
Restaurant de Hemel sits in the Commanderie van Sint Jan, a monastery building from 1196 in the middle of Nijmegen, just outside the bustle of the shopping streets. You eat under a heavy beamed ceiling, or outside in the enclosed courtyard that we call, without any hesitation, the finest terrace in Nijmegen.
Under this roof beer is brewed, coffee is roasted, chocolate is made and mustard is ground. What arrives on your plate and in your glass is usually not bought in but made by hand a few metres away. And the people who serve it know exactly what is in it.

Craft on the plate
What you taste here comes from this house
Four crafts you find again at the table. The fourth is the oldest, and the most important.
House beers on tap
Brewed by Stadsbrouwerij de Hemel in the cellars beneath your table. The largest range of house brewed beers in the Netherlands.
Coffee from Holy Beans
Roasted at Franseplaats 1, ever since Ilfa started in 2015. Your coffee has never travelled further than the stairs.
Our own beer mustard
Made with beer from the brewery. You find it in the soup and in the steak tartare.
Hospitality
The oldest craft of this house. Count Alardus and his wife Uda started a shelter for pilgrims here, and we have never stopped.
The menu
What comes to the table
The menu changes with the seasons. Every dish carries a beer suggestion, because the kitchen and the brewer work things out together. So you do not have to guess.
12.00 to 16.30
Lunch
House made beer mustard soup, salads, fresh sandwiches, toasties and burgers. From the club sandwich and the classic tuna melt to harissa hummus with grilled vegetables, pulled mushroom and beef carpaccio on a brioche bun. Vegetarian and vegan too.
from 17.00
Dinner
Dinner by Foodbar de Hemel. Dishes to share, or to keep to yourself. Ceviche from the brewer, tuna tartare with avocado and mango, steak tartare with blond beer and beer mustard. Then bavette bulgogi, cod cooked in miso, pan fried sea bass, an oyster mushroom steak or a côte de boeuf for two.
during the day and in the evening
High tea, drinks and tasting
During the day there is high tea. Beyond that you can have a drink here all day, under the heavy beamed ceiling or on the finest terrace in Nijmegen. In the Brewery Café we pour twelve of our own beers, with a high beer or a beer tasting alongside.

Since 1196
The table you are sitting at standsin a ruin that survived
Count Alardus and his wife Uda started a shelter here for pilgrims and the sick. Beer was already brewed here in 1495. In February 1944 a bomb hit the building hard, after which neighbours stripped it for building materials. What you see now was rebuilt between 1969 and 1974, stone by stone.
