The Power of Craft
Tasting beer in the place where it is brewed
The Brewery café sits on the ground floor of the Commanderie, among the copper kettles. In the brew hall and in the cellars under your feet, Stadsbrouwerij De Hemel makes the beer that comes out of the tap here.
On the basis of those beers we also distil liqueurs and genevers.

On tap
Twelve beers, all brewed here
You will not find this much house beer on tap anywhere else in the Netherlands. The list changes with the season.
If you want to know what is in your glass, look at our beers. There you find the style, the colour and the alcohol content of every beer.

Since 1999
The Brewery Café through the years
Beer has been poured in this building again since 1999. These images come from our own archive, from the early years up to today. Drag or scroll to look further.

Under one roof
What you taste here comes from this house
In this building beer is brewed, coffee is roasted, chocolate is made, mustard is ground and vinegar is aged. The difference lies with the people who make it and who welcome you.

All brewed in the brew hall and the cellars below.
From kettle to glass
The road from brewery to table does not get shorter than this.
Crafts in this building
Beer, coffee, chocolate, mustard and vinegar.
Welcoming guests since
Uda and count Alardus already received pilgrims and the sick here.
The clock. A fine thing to see in the café is the clock that was made especially for De Hemel. It is driven by an antique English movement and the dial is a work of art by Ada Breedveld.

Since 1495
Beer was already brewed herewhen Nijmegen was still a fortified town
Beer was already brewed in this house in 1495. After the bombing of 1944 a ruin was left, rebuilt between 1969 and 1974. In 1999 the brewery returned to its old place.
