The Power of Craft

Twelve house brewed beers on tap

Stadsbrouwerij De Hemel brews in the brew hall and in the cellars of the Commanderie van Sint Jan. What is made here we pour a few metres away.

You will not find this much house beer on tap anywhere else in the Netherlands.

The regular range

Eight beers that are always there

From a light pilsner to a grand cru that matures on cask for at least two years.

Luna

5%

A beer in pilsner style, pale with a pleasant hop aroma, filtered.

Godelief

5%

The oldest beer of the brewery, brewed since 1983. The dark malt and the careful use of hops make it a mild and approachable beer, with enough character to stay interesting over several glasses. A Belgian ale of light brown malt, with a hint of caramel.

Serafijn

5%

A heavenly wheat beer of wheat malt and barley malt, with orange peel and coriander for the typical fruitiness of the first Dutch wheat beer.

Mariken

6,5%

Our summer beer, blond in colour, fresh and aromatically spiced. With a secret spice that puts you in a good mood.

Moenen

6,5%

A smoked beer, brewed with smoked malt and therefore with a pronounced smoky aroma. Really one for lovers of a characterful beer.

Helse Engel

8%

A tripel. The name says it all, so tempting that a warning is in order.

Nieuw Ligt

10%

Full in flavour, colour and body. Despite the high alcohol content it holds a fine balance.

Nieuw Ligt Grand Cru

12%

The strongest. Subtle, soft and sweet. A second fermentation and at least two years of maturing on cask make it a real experience.

Seasonal and special beers

And whatever else the brewer thinks up

Alongside the regular range we serve seasonal beers and versions that return every year, such as the I.P.A.Hemels Dubbel, Rafael, Lentebok, Zomerzon and Gloeiende Gabriel. And sometimes something new appears on tap, such as the Stoutbecause brewer Henk wanted to try something again.

Weizen

5%

A rounded wheat beer, brewed with only malt, hops and wheat in the German tradition. A fruity taste reminiscent of banana, with little bitterness because less hops are used. The beer also owes its taste to the brewery own Weizen yeast strain.

Hemels Dubbel

6,5%

A dark beer, brewed with dark roasted malt. A little less sweet than most dubbels on the market, with soft bitterness. Like all our beers, with a top fermenting yeast.

Scotch

8,5%

Despite the name not a whisky but a seasonal beer, brewed in the Belgian tradition. A beautiful caramel flavour from the use of caramel malt, with a soft finish. First brewed in 2015 as a trial batch for the Alliantie van Bier Tapperijen.

Parapluvius

5,5%

A beer made with purified rainwater, together with Rainbeer and Green Capital Nijmegen. A fresh spiced flavour of liquorice and orange peel.

Eeuwige Jeugd

6,5%

Brewed after the example of a classic Belgian blond beer. A fresh taste and soft hop aromas give this beer the character of an easy drinker with flavour. Not too heavy, lovely on the terrace in late summer.

Hemelpoorter

5,5%

A generous amount of roasted malt for this light porter, good for the dark colour of the beer and the foam. The first taste is a bitter burnt note, but taste more carefully and you find chocolate, coffee and liquorice, with a full creamy finish.

The story behind Parapluvius

Parapluvius is brewed with rainwater, together with Rainbeer and Green Capital Nijmegen. Rainbeer is a company originally from Amsterdam that specialises in purifying rainwater for brewing beer. The brewers of De Hemel make the beer with that water, and Green Capital Nijmegen brings in the knowledge of water management.

The message: Nijmegen wants to be climate proof by 2050, able to cope with long rainfall, cloudbursts and the flooding that comes with them. Rainwater still largely disappears into the sewer. That burdens the sewer and it is a waste as well, because you can also brew beer with it.
